3D Modelling and rendering
Recently I have been trying to get to grips with a number of 3D packages with the ultimate aim of being able to produce architectural visualisations and fly-throughs. I have started with Blender - a freely distributed program. I have also had a brief look at Rhino(ceros) and Sketchup.
Blender
A 3D application which works on both Windows and Unix/Linux platforms. (I use the latter). Released under the GNU Public License therefore it is free to use and distribute within any educational, commercial and professional environment. The package offers modelling using meshes and objects, animation, rendering and also has a game engine.
<<<< Work In Progress
A model of my Canon Ixus 430 digital camera. Still need to do the strap and the flash. There is something wrong with the render of the chrome lens surround but I think I will patch it up in Photoshop.
Rhino
A 3D application for Windows. At first glance looks rather like blender with the addition of the familiar "windows" environment icons and buttons. Have yet to produce something from it. There seems to be a lack of online free tutorials.
Sketchup
Very easy to pick up from the programs introductory tutorials. May lack the ability to do intricate detailing but as the name suggests- this best for quick mock-ups. Has extra plugins for interior designers, landscape architects, engineers and architects.
Autodesk Viz 2005
This is great for architectural/landscape models and renders as it has options for creating walls, fences and staircases with parameters to alter! So much quicker! Terrain modelling is pretty simple to do as well. Lighting and camera work is similar to the others, you just need to understand the principles and you can do it in whichever program you choose.
